SmartGeoMetrics had the pleasure of documenting the most complex machine man has ever created. Upon the retiring of the Space Shuttle fleet by NASA, a project was undertaken to record all of the necessary details about a shuttle to allow for HABS/HAER documents to be presented to the Library of Congress and to set a benchmark for the maintenance of these machines as they enter museum collections. The shuttle Discovery was chosen as the premier example of the fleet. SmartGeoMetrics collected laser scan data on all visible surfaces inside and out as well as panoramic images of the Discovery inside the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). The data from this project was used by the National Park Service to create HABS/HAER drawings and by NASA as the source for a new website dedicated to the Space Shuttle.
